Thrift (2009)
Thrift is a dance about economy where effort and yield are points of interest, and the examination ranges from the economy-at-large to the economy of a single gesture. The project includes a sort of etymological analysis, launching from a long-running interest in economy as practiced in dance.
As the concept is used there, it is about moving with efficiency, minimal muscular effort, with the ultimate goal of simplicity. The value of dancing economically can be stated in terms also used in the field of economics: effort, yield, productivity, and sustainability. Smart dancers minimize effort and maximize yield; we hone technique in order to sustain our careers.
In Thrift, that simplicity is contrasted to the complexity that defined and undermined the current economy, and is ultimately a dance about labor.
