ODE (2003)

ODE is our nod to the original Seldoms - a 19th C. English music hall group that staged living tableaux of classical and mythological themes. ODE plays with the tension of stillness and delicate gesture against sharp, tense movement and moments of collapse.

ODE premiered on a proscenium stage with glowing, rectangular corex flats as background, designed by collaborator/architect Joel Huffman and lit by Kevin Rechner. In 2004, it was remounted in the outdoor garden at Architectural Artifacts in Chicago, again featuring Lara Miller's signature sculptural costumes. The setting in the garden space was perfect for this dance with its 22' limestone columns and the bull heads from the original Chicago Mercantile Exchange Building, church spires from England, and monumental limestone pylons. This setting became our acropolis, our archaeological site, where ODE breathed with a steady, relentless grace. One audience member commented that ODE had 'found its home.'
