About Us

History

Since The Seldoms' first project in 2001, we have taken a path marked by divergence and unpredictability. While always maintaining sophistication in our production values, we are willing to go in many directions in our artistic exploration. The repertory ranges from comedic and absurd theatrical pieces that incorporate text to cool, abstract movement-based work.

Our interest in staging dance outside the traditional theater and within extraordinary settings has compelled us to make site-sensitive works for the Tiffany glass domed hall in the Chicago Cultural Center (Nacre voit), the outdoor sculpture garden and atrium of the 80,000 square foot Architectural Artifacts in Chicago (ODE and Lil' Roy & the Weird Sisters), the grounds of a historic Arts and Crafts mansion (Recluse), the Lurie Gardens in Chicago's Millenium Park, and on the slanted bottom of a large outdoor drained swimming pool (GIANT FIX).

Since 2001, The Seldoms have produced ten full-length evening programs, premiered fourteen dances and created a short dance video. Our numerous collaborations include partnerships with the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), composer Richard Woodbury, painter Jackie Kazarian, and designer Lara Miller. In the last five years, the company has appeared regularly in the Chicago area, performing in local festivals as well as our own productions, and has performed in Wisconsin, Texas and North Carolina.

The Seldoms has received support from The Boeing Company, The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, The Mayer & Morris Kaplan Family Foundation, the Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation, the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, The Chicago Community Trust, the Weasel Fund, and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and numerous generous individuals.
